The city of Tomsk grew significantly in the mid-20th century due to the migration of Soviet institutions during World War II, the development of nuclear facilities in the 1950s, and petroleum production beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. The oblast's charter was adopted on July 26, 1995. Politically, after the Soviet period, the head of the oblast administration (governor) was appointed or elected alongside an elected regional parliament. The current governor is Vladimir Mazur, and the Legislative Duma has 42 deputies, with United Russia holding the majority.
